I
couldn’t tell you a time when I haven’t struggled with my eyesight. My parents
both where glasses and have very strong prescriptions, so it was only
inevitable I would have to too. However, I have a habit of ‘forgetting’ to wear
my glasses. Even though the style of frames have become much more fashionable
over the last 10 years I still don’t like the feeling of having glasses on all
day, plus I feel like they ruin my makeup and give me headaches over long
periods of time.
This
leaves me in a conundrum, I need something to improve my eyesight but I don’t
want to wear glasses. What do I do? I am not brave enough to go through the
invasive process of laser eye surgery yet, so that’s where contact lenses come
in. I have only recently been trialling different brands and lens styles so I
thought I’d put this post together to enlighten you with some of the tips I
have picked up along the way about both choosing the right brand of contact
lens plus advice on how to wear them.
1.
Relax. Lots of people, including myself at first worry that they’ll scratch
their eyes while putting their lenses in or, worse, that the contact lens will
get stuck behind their eye. My tip is just to relax. there is no need to be
afraid to touch your eye as long as your hands are clean. Plus, the inside of
your eyelids are connected to the back of your eye, so your lenses can’t
possibly slip into an hole.
2.
Keep lenses clean and don’t take shortcuts with lens cleaning. Your doctor will give you instructions that
are specific to the lens care regime that is chosen for you which includes
bathing the lenses in multipurpose solution. If this cleaning routine sounds
like too much of a faff, which it did for me, then opt for a daily disposable,
such as Acuvue Oasys or Focus Dailes. These lenses can be thrown out every
night and exchanged for a fresh new pair each morning, eliminating cleaning and
storage concerns. I much prefer this as I never remember to clean them!
3.
Hydrate. Whether or not you wear contact lenses, it’s important to stay
hydrated by drinking plenty of water. In addition to this you may want to
increase your fluid intake with rewetting drops for your eyes. For example,
people who spend a lot of time on the computer or are exposed to dry air,
heating or air conditioning could benefit from eye drops. Just remember to get
an eye drop brand that is compatible with your contact lenses.
4. Research,
research, research! I can’t tell you how important it is to look into the best
brand to suit you. Look at reviews and customer testimonials. You can also
sample lenses, you can’t just go off other people’s views as your eyes could
react to the lenses completely differently to you. Make sure to also stick to
the prescribed wearing schedule, the worst thing is wearing them too long!
If
you stick to these tips you can’t go wrong. It may take about a week until you
adapt to your new life with contact lenses and feel truly confident. I’m so so
glad I tried them, I wouldn’t ever go back to just wearing glasses.
